Insights into the 39th Internet Identity Workshop with Contributions to the Future of Digital Identities
The 39th Internet Identity Workshop (IIW) in Mountain View, California, brought together 350 professionals from around the world to discuss the latest developments in identity and wallet technology. The event, conducted in an open "unconference" style, allowed participants to share their knowledge and experiences in over 180 sessions. Project members from the Architecture & Consultation Process for EUDI Wallets of the Federal Agency for Disruptive Innovation (SPRIN-D) significantly contributed to the event with a total of 20 presentations and active participation in discussions.
The IIW provided a valuable platform to reflect on and develop technical solutions on a global scale. Key goals included:
-
Promoting the exchange of technical solutions with international experts
-
Presenting contributions to the standardization of identity technologies
-
Working on future topics such as operating system support for secure wallet calls
The sessions focused on key topics of standardization and implementation crucial for the future of digital identities:
-
Standardization of protocols: Presentations included work on presentation and issuance protocols like OpenID4VP and OpenID4VCI, and discussions on requirements set by eIDAS and the Implementing Acts.
-
Improved UX: A particular focus was on the presentation of one credential as user authentication mechanism to receive another credential from the Provider. For example, present Person Identification Data (PID) to receive digital driver's licenses.
-
Zero Knowledge Proofs: Discussions on new developments in Zero Knowledge Proofs (ZKP) highlighted the potential of this technology to enhance privacy in credential presentation.
Additionally, information on current and planned projects in Germany, such as the development of the government-provided Wallet and the FUNKE competition, was presented. Insights into the history and further development of the German eID and the implementation of the European Digital Identity Wallet were also shared.
A highlight of the event was the demo hour, where participants had the opportunity to test the wallets of the FUNKE teams live. These practical insights impressively demonstrated the progress and potential of innovative solutions from Germany.
